Liver Cancer Radiation Therapy Criteria Overview

• The indication for particle beam radiation therapy is a primary liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma) diagnosed pathologically with biopsy or clinically.
• A clinically diagnosed primary liver cancer must meet all of the following criteria:
  1) Patients of hepatitis C or B
  2) Lectin affinity of AFP isoforms (AFP-L3%) is 15% or higher, or PIVKA-II is 40AU/mL or higher.
  3) Dynamic CT or hepatic artery angiography shows a transient stain in early phase and a low concentration in late phase (60 seconds or later).
• As a rule, the therapy aims at a solitary liver cancer. However, if multiple satellite lesions exist in subsegments of the liver and if they fall within the same irradiation range, they can be treated. If there is a lesion in the liver that has been treated before, the particle beam must be controlled carefully when radiation therapy starts.
