Particle Beam Radiation Therapy for Prostate Cancer

  • The indication for particle beam radiation therapy is a prostate cancer diagnosed pathologically.
  • The therapy can be used if there is no lymph node metastasis or no distant metastasis. However, depending on the condition, endocrine therapy may be necessary before particle beam radiation therapy. The length of endocrine therapy varies.
  • Local-regional prostate cancer, which is a relatively early stage cancer, can be treated by particle beam alone (A).
  • In some cases, depending on the stage at the time of the diagnosis (before therapy), biopsy result, and the PSA value, it is necessary to perform a 6-month endocrine therapy (hormonal therapy) prior to the particle beam radiation therapy (B, C).
  • As a general rule, the endocrine therapy will be stopped upon the start of particle beam radiation therapy (A, B).
  • Some locally advanced prostate cancers (C) require continuation of the endocrine therapy for more than one year after the particle beam radiation therapy.
