• The indication for particle beam radiation therapy is a local recurrence of a rectal cancer diagnosed by imaging studies after a surgery.
• The recurrence must be localized to the interior of the pelvis. (Invasion to the sacrum is not an issue).
• If the intestinal tract (small or large intestine) is present within 2cm from the recurrence, particle beam radiation therapy cannot be used. (Consequently, the therapy cannot be used for the recurrence at the anastomotic site after the anterior resection of a rectal cancer.)
• By surgically inserting a spacer, particle beam radiation therapy may become possible, even if the intestinal tract is in the proximity of the recurrence.
