Pancreatic Cancer Radiation Therapy Criteria Overview

• The indication for particle beam radiation therapy is a primary pancreatic cancer diagnosed pathologically (with biopsy, cytodiagnosis, or surgery) or clinically.
• Any histological type is treatable.
• As a general rule, there should not be a lymph node metastasis, or if there is, it must be able to receive irradiation with the target volume setting prescribed for the primary pancreatic lesion. (It must exist close to the pancreatic cancer.)
• As a general rule, an anticancer agent (Gemzar) will be used at the same time.
• If the digestive tract is in the proximity, it might be necessary to have a surgery to create sufficient space between the tumor and the digestive tract (spacer placement surgery) before the particle beam radiation therapy.
