Particle Beam Radiation Therapy System
The particle beam radiation therapy system irradiates tumors deep within the body with concentrated particles. To do this, particles are accelerated in order to penetrate deep within the body. The system must have the ability to affect the surrounding healthy cells as little as possible.
System Configuration
The particle beam radiation therapy system is comprised of:
- An injector system that provides preliminary acceleration of particle beams
(ion source, RFQ, DTL)
- A synchrotron that injects a beam from the injector system and accelerates
the beams to the appropriate energy level for treatment.
- A high-energy beam transport (HEBT) system that efficiently guides the
accelerated beam to a specified irradiation chamber.
- An irradiation system that properly irradiates the tumor with the supplied
beam, and
- An integrated control system that runs the particle beam radiation therapy
equipment by performing adjustment, operational control and status monitoring.
In addition, for each system, power is supplied from several hundred small
and large power sources, which are housed in 3 specialized rooms. Also,
the particle beam radiation therapy system is equipped with a cooling system
to cool down the electromagnets and a compressed air system that activates
the equipment.
