3.Therapy Rehearsal

Explanation Provided before the Therapy

Using the approved plan for the particle beam radiation therapy, we explain the expected effects and side effects to the patient in writing. If the patient gives his/her consent to the therapy, we officially establish the treatment schedule. This explanation is given by the doctor in charge, accompanied by a nurse.

Therapy Rehearsal

Before we start the radiation therapy, we let the patient have a rehearsal of the therapy. Also at this time, we perform a final check on the immobilization device and the settings for the particle beam radiation therapy system. First, we position the patient and take X-ray images for matching, which become the standard for us to carry out the daily irradiation as scheduled. This rehearsal takes approximately one hour, and the patient must stay perfectly still during this period.

【1】	The patient lies on the treatment table in the therapy room. He/she attaches the immobilization device and takes the same posture as he/she did in the positioning CT session.
【2】	The treatment table is moved from the center location where the patient is positioned during the positioning CT session to the irradiation center point determined by the therapy plan.
【3】	Subtle adjustments are made to the calculated amount of error between the image produced by the therapy planning system and the actual X-ray image. These adjustments take time because we aim at reducing the error to less than one millimeter.
【4】	After the calculated amount of error becomes less than one millimeter, X-ray images are taken for matching. These images will be used to position the patient in the actual radiation therapy. We also make a marking on the immobilization device as a reference point for positioning.

All preparations for the treatment are now completed.

If the patient prefers receiving the therapy as an outpatient, he/she will be discharged from our facility after the rehearsal.
