4.Beginning of Therapy

Patient Positioning

To carry out precise particle beam radiation therapy, we need to position the patient before each therapy session.

【1】 The patient lies on the treatment table with the immobilization device attached in the same way as during the rehearsal.
【2】 We move the treatment table into an approximate position, using the mark on the immobilization device as a guide
【3】 We position the patient as we take X-ray images of the front and the side, and adjust the amount of possible error against the matching X-ray images.
【4】 When the margin of error becomes less than one millimeter, patient positioning is complete.
【5】 To start irradiation, we set up the therapy system.

Particle Beam Irradiation

We press the trigger button on the radiation therapy system and start irradiation.

The patient waits in the same posture until the irradiation is over. Actual irradiation time is approximately one minute. During the irradiation, the patient does not feel pain or heat from the particle beam, which is not visible either.

Irradiation of the chest or abdomen is synchronized with the patient's breathing rhythm. Irradiation time in these situations is longer, lasting several minutes.

During this time, the patient must stay still. Even after the therapy is finished, the patient must not move until instruction is given.

PET Imaging after the Therapy

To confirm that particle beam has been irradiated correctly as planned, we take PET images and match the irradiation field.
